Common Sense Media launches Spanish-language ratings and reviews to help Latin American families find high-quality, age-appropriate content for kids

Launching at the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, the new offering will help Spanish-speaking households find great movie and TV choices for the whole family to enjoy.

SAN FRANCISCO, September 15, 2022 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Common Sense Media, best known for its award-winning, research-based ratings and reviews, today announced that movie and TV show reviews are now available in Spanish for help fill the void for Latino families looking for high-quality, age-appropriate content for their children. The new offering is the first of its kind and brings media advice to the growing population of Spanish speakers in the United States, while helping Latino families find culturally relevant movies and TV shows.

The new spanish language library launches with 150 reviews and will grow to 500 by the end of the year. The list includes titles that celebrate Latino culture, like Selena and Encantoas well as pop culture phenomena, like The sand man and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The new Spanish-language destination will also feature curated lists of recommendations for families that cover categories such as “Best Latin Movies to Watch as a Family,” “Best Disney Movies,” and “Best Movies with Mexican Characters.”

The lack of reviews and recommendations available in Spanish has long sidelined Latino parents, who are looking for high-quality entertainment options at home. At a time when nearly 20% of the US population is Hispanic and approximately 40.5 million US residents in the country speak Spanish at home, this new resource will help break the language barrier for many families and will give them access to culturally relevant entertainment resources.

According to research, looking at favorable representations of their own ethnic and racial group can have a positive impact on children’s self-perceptions. New Spanish ratings and reviews are written with true cultural sensitivity by native speakers who take an intentional approach in analyzing children’s programming. The Latino editors team uses Common Sense Media’s research-based rubric to assess authentic and positive on-screen portrayals. By rating TV shows and movies through this lens, Spanish-speaking families will be able to find more positive, Latino-centric stories so that Latino children can see stronger portrayals of people who look like them.

The new ratings and reviews will launch at the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, and Common Sense Media will also post best-of list curations and resources celebrating the experiences and contributions of Latin American communities. Curations will include standout titles from movies, TV shows, podcasts, books, and games.
