It’s no huge surprise that the Detroit Lions are significantly in the list of independent receivers, but a report released Sunday tied them to specific names.
The Detroit Lions are sure to be a top player in the free agent market at wide receiver, although some notable options have been mooted. Few options available (if any) should be considered out of the question, but an insider Jordan Schultz has tied the Lions to some specific names among the wide receiver free agent class.
I’ve been told Detroit is interested in Christian Kirk, Braxton Berrios and Russell Gage — who the Falcons are hoping to bring back. DJ Chark is also someone Lions love too,” Schultz tweeted.
Kirk has been linked with the Lions as a potential free agent, and Gage would also be a solid target if Atlanta can’t bring him back. Berrios would be a possible new target, and if he’s really looking for $9 million a year in a free agent deal, he might be a bit too expensive for the Lions.
Kirk is expected to have a good market for his services, and NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero hinted that it “wouldn’t be a shock” to see him get $15 million or more a year.
After a season cut short by injury, Chark could be in for a good deal. But he looks like an ideal candidate for what the Lions are openly looking for – big, fast and with some red zone chops.
Detroit Lions set to add notable wide receiver to free agency mix
One prominent name missing from Schultz’s report is Allen Robinson, the Detroit native and soon-to-be former Chicago Bear who is sure to have multiple teams courting him as the free agent legal tampering period begins Monday. Either way, when the deals can become official on Wednesday, it’s fair to expect the Lions to add at least one wide receiver with a recognizable name to go with Amon-Ra St. Brown, Josh Reynolds, and more.
