Relations between Serbia and Hungary are based on understanding and caring, President Katalin Novák said on Friday during the inauguration of the building of the Faculty of Hungarian Language Teacher Education of the University of Novi Sad in Subotica (Szabadka), in northern Serbia.
In his speech at the inauguration, Novak underlined that the ethnic Hungarian community in the Serbian region of Vojvodina and the Serbian leadership were working hard to maintain the friendship between the two countries “as close as it is”. The President said that the children of Vojvodina should receive not only knowledge, but also love of their mother tongue, identity, faith and patriotism.
Novák also spoke about the migration pressure facing Serbia and the rest of Europe, saying Prime Minister Ana Brnabic assured him that Serbia “understands this problem” and is working on a solution that will help the local Hungarian community. .
She reiterated Hungary’s support for Serbia’s accession to the European Union, saying that “we need Serbia and it is in our interest that the Hungarian ethnic community of Vojvodina obtains EU citizenship European as soon as possible.
István Pásztor, head of the Alliance of Hungarians in Vojvodina (VMSZ), described Novák’s visit to Belgrade as “an important new step” in relations between the two countries, which also benefited the Hungarians in Vojvodina.
He said the teacher training faculty building would not have become a reality without the Hungarian government’s contribution of more than one billion forints (2.5 million euros) to the project.
